Index

An index is a collection of well chosen stocks to serve as a representation of the state of the current market. Each index is maintained by a group which defines a multiplier and stock selection. An index can be market measured or price measured. Fund managers commonly compare their portfolios with an index to determine if they are lagging or outperform it.
