A breakout is a term in technical analysis that describes the behavior of a price finally breaking free from an established support or resistance level. The breakout is strengthened further when traders waiting for the price to go above or below an established support or resistance finally executes their orders. Most limit orders are also triggered just above or below the support or resistance line leaving the volume of orders to one side executed.
