Bear raid

A bear raid is an illegal market practice that involves a trader selling large quantities of stocks short. This activity would push the stock price downward until it is cheap enough to buy back the stock to cover and profit. These scenarios are avoided by the uptick rule set by the Securities and Exchange Commision that only allows shorting when the last price of the stock is higher than its last closing price.
