Chinese wall

The term Chinese wall refers to the imaginary barrier set by an investment firm between its departments so that operational information cannot reach departments that are not supposed to gain the information. This is set by the Securities and Exchange Commission as rule 10b-5 that this barrier be maintained to avoid the unfair advantage gained from the general investment public.
