Earned surplus

Earned surplus or retained earnings is a special account created by transfers from net income. Earned surplus can either be distributed to shareholders or used for expansion or other projects. By not distributing dividends, the valuation for the company's stocks would be upgraded since the undistributed surplus will be added to the current value of its assets.
