Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval System (EDGAR). Refers to the collection, performing automated validation, indexing, forwarding and acceptance of investment information submissions by companies and others who are required by the law to file with the Securities and Exchange Commision. The main purpose is increasing the efficiency and fairness of the securities market for the benefit of corporations, investors, and the economy, by accelerating the acceptance, receipt, analysis and dissemination of time-sensitive corporate information filed the related agency.
