Expense is to treat an outlay of money as an operating expense during a fiscal period, deducting it from revenues so that it appears on the accounting records as an expense, reducing profits, rather than as an asset. The item is used up in a relatively short time, and the treatment is the opposite of capitalizing an expenditure.
